Automation can really decrease the resources required to reach a comfortable and safe life for individuals, while limiting the footprint of humans on Earth. However, full automation is not possible as feelings are driven by human actions.
But what would people do in a very advanced world? Imagine a world where almost all low-value tasks are automated, renewable energy and consumption are standard and well-managed, and societal processes are as fair as possible among humans and between species.
In such a world, remaining activities would require a search for constant renewal of activities and sources of entertainment. Research in enabling technologies would likely be present, especially given the complexity of the world. Eating, drinking, entertaining, sports, learning, and socializing would also remain an important part of time spent. The need for diversity would motivate migration and life changes.
Additionally, caring for wildlife may also represent a valuable mission for humanity. The same goes for exploring the universe seeking other forms of life.
This proves that there is plenty to do now as well as in an ideal future.
